Hearing Loss: Facts and Myths


Hearing loss affects an estimated 31.4 million Americans, 3 in 10 individuals over 60 and 1 in 6 baby boomers have hearing loss.

Common myths about hearing loss include surgery will improve my hearing; about 5-10% of hearing loss can be corrected with surgery. Hearing loss affects only "old people" and is a sign of aging; only about 35% of people with hearing loss are older than 64, about a million are school age and about 6 million are between 18 - 44 years of age. The majority of people (about 65%) with hearing loss are younger than 65 years of age. Another common myths is if I had a hearing loss my physician would tell me; only about 14% of physicians routinely screen for hearing loss during physicals. In the small examination room of the physician's office, they may not realize the decline in hearing.

Consequences of untreated hearing loss

The psychological impact can affect many aspects of our lives. The decline in hearing and understanding can adversely affect our communication with family and friends. This strain on communication may lead to isolation, anxiety, depression and anger. Hearing loss is a communication barrier, in that it is invisible. People who have a good attitude with proper fitting hearing aids report improved relationship and feeling of well being.
